At 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, runners will line up outside Greenlawn Fire Department headquarters at 23 Boulevard Avenue for the Engine Company's 11th Halloween 5K. The course runs through Greenlawn and ends back at the firehouse. That afternoon, Harborfields Public Library holds Storybook Halloween from 2 to 4 p.m. The same Saturday is Halloween Movies Day at Halloween House Long Island, the indoor attraction that opened for the season on Oct. 1 at its new location, 777 Pulaski Road.
Halloween House is the new name on Greenlawn's October calendar. Most of the rest of that calendar is run by the hamlet's longtime civic groups, the same ones that ran its summer and early fall. Halloween House moved into a season those groups had already filled.
The Calendar Was Already Full by September
You can see who sets Greenlawn's schedule by working backward from October. The Greenlawn Fire Department held its annual Fireman's Fair from Sept. 3 through Sept. 6 at 23 Boulevard Avenue, opening with parade night on Sept. 3 and adding food, rides, games, raffles, and family entertainment. Two weeks later, on Sept. 19, the Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association held its 46th Pickle Festival at John Gardiner Farm, 900 Park Avenue. The festival had pickle foods, hayrides, the historic Lollipop Farm Train, antique cars, crafts, and live entertainment.
Summer followed the same small-scale pattern. Greenlawn Summer Nights returned on July 29 and Aug. 12, with local music on the Village Auto Body Greenlawn driveway. None of these events needed a new venue. The firehouse, a farm the historical association has used for 46 festivals, and a local business driveway handled all of them.
The historical association's events page now reads "No upcoming events!" So for the rest of the fall, the fire department and the library carry the calendar.
How Oct. 24 Fills Up
October has one day when all three schedules land on top of each other. Oct. 24 is a Saturday, and here's how it lays out:
- 9 a.m. The GFD Engine Company's Halloween 5K starts and finishes at 23 Boulevard Avenue.
- 2 to 4 p.m. Storybook Halloween at Harborfields Public Library offers trick-or-treating among storybook characters. Registration is required.
- 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Halloween House is open on its Saturday hours. Its Halloween Movies Day invites guests to come dressed as characters from "Hocus Pocus," "Beetlejuice," "Ghostbusters," or "The Addams Family," and organizers say the winner will get more than $250 in Halloween merchandise.
Halloween House's posted hours cover everything the firehouse and library aren't using. A family can run the 5K in the morning and get to the library by 2. The Pulaski Road attraction stays open until 9 p.m. Organizers note that hours may change, so check before you go.
What the New Address Brings
Halloween House is built to fit a weeknight or a free stretch of a Saturday, not to take over a whole evening. Organizers describe it as an indoor walk-through without actors chasing guests, jump scares, or gore. Visitors go through themed rooms, play games, and stop for photos at their own pace.
"We completely reimagined Halloween House for 2026 with a new location," Halloween House President Michael Dessart told Patch. "We wanted to create a place where people can walk through at their own pace, take pictures, play games, laugh and just have a great time."
New rooms this year include Halloween House Jeopardy, the Monster Mash Rave, the Spiderweb Spectacle, and a redesigned Halloween House Carnival with prize games. The Glow Room, ToFright Show Talk Show, Trick or Treat Room, Shriek Easy Speakeasy, and Horror Hotel Room are back.
The weekday schedule is the part that matters for people who live nearby. Hours run 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The themed days still ahead are:
- Oct. 10, K-Pop Demon Day
- Oct. 11, RIP Jets Season, with a contest for the best "disappointed Jets fan" photo
- Oct. 17, Netflix Night and Day, with a $250 Visa gift card as the announced prize
- Oct. 18, Knicks Night and Day
- Oct. 24, Halloween Movies Day
- Oct. 25, GTA Day
- Oct. 31, The Night (and Day) Mare Before Christmas, which ties into the upcoming Christmas House experience
777 Pulaski Road is also the street address printed on the Greenlawn Farms October flyer. The flyer lists the market as open seven days, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and covers its meat, prepared foods, bakery, and grocery departments.
Pumpkins Come Through the Library, Not a Patch
Greenlawn's pumpkin season mostly runs through Harborfields Public Library. The library's annual pumpkin contest asks K–5 families to bring in pumpkins decorated as storybook characters between Oct. 5 and Oct. 23, the day before Storybook Halloween. Adults get their own night on Oct. 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. "Create-Your-Own Halloween Decoration" costs $5, and each participant makes a lighted wooden decoration.
The nearest farm is a market, not a field. Rexer Family Farm, at 1028 Park Avenue in Huntington, lists farm-grown squash and greens, pumpkin bread, apple-cider donuts, and pies for fall 2026. Its site says plainly that it doesn't offer pick-your-own. Rexer also has two dried-floral workshops this month, at $95 each. The first is Sunday, Oct. 18, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the second is Monday, Oct. 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Dinner Stays on Broadway
None of the October events serve a sit-down meal, so dinner comes from the restaurants on Broadway. Old Fields, at 81 Broadway, is known for its marinated steaks and offers carryout and delivery. Swallow Kitchen & Cocktails serves classic dishes, signature wings, and cocktails, with happy hour Monday through Thursday. That fits a weeknight visit to Halloween House.
Broadway is also the street the Town of Huntington has been redesigning. In April, the Town and the Greenlawn Civic Association presented conceptual safety plans at Harborfields Public Library. The plans are tied to a $650,000 Suffolk County JumpStart grant. The concepts shown that night included:
- Reconfigured and refreshed crosswalks
- Solar-powered rapid-flashing beacons
- Decorative painted road treatments that make the lanes look narrower
- A raised median and gateway near The Maples
- A real-time speed-feedback sign
- Parking and striping changes to improve sightlines at intersections
Huntington Matters reported that resident feedback focused on parking restrictions and on parked cars blocking sightlines. Attendees also asked that access to local businesses be protected, and officials said the parking plans could change. In April, officials also said preliminary sidewalk work had started and that the project had to move quickly to seek grant reimbursement by the end of June.
The other end of Broadway is also under construction. At Route 25, NYSDOT plans to realign Dix Hills Road and Broadway into two signalized intersections, with right-turn lanes on both roads. As of early October, the state's project page still lists the work as "Under Construction," even though its estimated substantial-completion date of Aug. 3, 2026, has passed. If you're driving to Halloween House or the firehouse from Jericho Turnpike, expect to go through the work zone.
If you've been to the Fireman's Fair, a Pickle Festival, or a library program, you've seen how much of Greenlawn's year runs on the hamlet's own institutions. The Sharon Levine team keeps up with that calendar as closely as we follow the market. If you'd like to talk about what your Greenlawn home is worth, or about a move within the area, Team Levine is happy to set up a free home valuation or a consultation at a time that works around your October.
